Leadership and Character

"Character makes trust possible, and trust is the foundation of leadership"
John C. Maxwell

The relationship of headmaster's leadership and teacher's performance always be one of the interesting topic to explore in research. Most results of those researches claimed that headmaster's leadership affects to teacher's performance. Some researches said that teachers can do their job without any intervention or involve by headmaster. The question is, how's the management can be run well without any person in charge as a leader? How important are the functions of headmaster at school? Or there is a headmaster at school, but he has no character in leading the organization.

LEADERSHIP AND CHARACTER

Leadership means different things to different people around the world,  different things in different situation. For example, it could be related to community leadership, religious leadership, political leadership, and leadership of campaigning groups. Leaders help themselves and others to do the right things. They set direction, build an inspiring vision, and create something new. Leadership is about mapping out where you need to go to "win" as a team or an organization; and it is dynamic, exciting, and inspiring.

Character define "your moral self" or "moral structure" of human being. It reflects the quality that defines a personality of the person.

Abraham Lincoln stated: “Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow.” Reputation and character are mirror images of each other, one being real and one being an illusion. This means that we truly are more powerful than who people think we are. One that embodies self mastery and  self control.

Character affects every area of our lives decisions, our words, our actions, our attitudes, our goals, and our relationships. A leader who leads through character is guided by authenticity, not by image. The leader who leads through character is focused on creating value and contribution rather than winning at all costs. Such a leader values openness and inclusion not control and exclusion. Quality is an important value. Henry Ford states: “Quality means doing it right when no one is looking.”

Your character determines how you will respond in any given situation, whether success or failure. Everyone’s triumphs and success are built  through many processes in life. True leaders must be able to accept failure and can  make any bad decisions at some point in their lives. It develops and shaping their character. They will know at once when the problems come. They know how to responds it well.

Success of the school also determines by the leadership of headmaster. Headmaster plays important roles in managing the school, include contribute to teacher's performance. Character is important for leadership because it is vital to success; it is the first thing anyone looks at. We will be judged by our character.
